The Grist Mill Tour
Located on the site of the original mill built by Pilgrim John Jenney and steps away from the original plantation. Step back in time as you enter the doors of the 1636 mill. You will feel the warmth and charm of the old mill and it’s miller. This 30-minute tour will delight both young and old. Get to know the story of John and Sarah Jenney and their children. Find out how they traveled to America and why they built the mill. Hear the story of the Pilgrim’s journey to America. Learn about their struggles and how important the mill was to their survival. Discover how their faith in God led them to America and how it influenced their day-to-day lives.
Along with all the wonderful history you will also see the huge water wheel turn the grinding stones and learn the process of grinding whole corn into corn meal. See the fish ladder and find out its purpose and how it affected the building of the mill. After your tour visit our gift shop. Relax on our deck as you enjoy the water wheel turning and the beautiful gardens. There is an ice cream shop, coffee shop and restaurant on the premises. We are also located across the street from The John Carver Inn. There is plenty of free public parking and a short walk to the historic waterfront and beautiful downtown Plymouth. Your visit to Plymouth will not be complete without a journey to the mill.
Historic Walking Tour
This 60-minute tour will take you on the same path the Pilgrims took over 300 years ago. Tour includes Brewster Gardens, the historic waterfront area including Plymouth Rock. You will walk up to Cole’s Hill and Leyden Street to Town Square. Then up to Burial Hill and down to the site of the original plantation and the historic site of the 1636 Jenney Grist Mill area. On your tour you will see the sight of the first meetinghouse that was built in 1621 and the sights of some of the homes of the first Pilgrims.
You will walk by the first burial site of the Pilgrims and walk up First Street to the sight of the first church built in Plymouth. These are only a sample of the history you will experience while on the tour. Of course a large part of the tour experience will be hearing the humorous and entertaining historical perspective of our costumed miller.
Corn Grinding Exhibits
Corn grindings are done randomly throughout the season. If you would like to attend an exhibit, please call once you arrive and ask for the weekly schedule to make a reservation.
