The Jenney Grist Mill
Plymouth, Massachusetts
The Jenney Grist Mill affords hands on and interactive opportunities for students and teachers - keys to successful and positive learning and crosses the curriculum to each grade level and most subject areas. Curriculum units based on the Grist Mill experience afford teachers the opportunity to connect on sight visitations to the classroom and are aligned with curriculum frameworks and aid in MCAS preparation! We cover 17th century Plymouth and Massachusetts history, Colonial industry including six simple machines and how they work together to make a complex machine. Colonial jobs, learning by apprenticing, the barter system and how it led to our current economic system. Colonial agriculture and the use of corn as a staple. Technology changes past, present and future. Water power and energy, family life in colonial times and much more.
Curriculum Based PurposeThe Jenney Grist Mill's purpose is to educate students, visitors and the community regarding the economic, historic and agricultural significance of the 1636 Jenney Mill. In working our purpose we incorporate much more than the history of the Jenney Mill such as famous people and events in Plymouth and Massachusetts history, science and technology, industry and business, math, economics, physics, earth science, environmental science, engineering, social studies, language arts, reading, writing, art, family and consumer science, physical and chemical weathering and many others.
We make learning fun!
What Teachers, Students & Tour Companies have to say about us.....
"One of the highlights for our three day trip to Cape Cod is the Jenney Grist Mill. Each year the student projects mention how the Jenney Grist Mill was one of their favorite activities. The kids learn alot and are entertained by Leo Martin. Of course the ice cream and slushes are always a big hit as well." Jennifer Reed -King Philip MS - West Hartford Connecticut
"For the past 4 years I have brought 7th grade students to the Grist Mill. Both students and teachers are delighted and amazed with what they witnessed and learned at the Mill. Every time we are leaving, the positive comments from everyone on the trip reinforce to me that I must keep this activity in the trip each year" Terry Henry - Tour Guide - Levittown, PA
"Thank you for including a mill on our trip. I've read about water mills and flour mills, but I never really understood how they worked. We learned about commerce in Colonial America, but the Jenney Grist Mill put pictures to words and made history come to life" 8th grade student - Bruriah High School - New York
